Work on Mumbai’s seven STPs to kick off soon

BMC is likely to award works for the construction of its seven sewerage treatment plants (STPs) before May 31. Around 2500 million litres (MLD) of sewerage water will be recycled per day after completion. These are slated to be set up at seven spots — Worli (500 MLD), Bandra (360 (MLD), Malad (454 MLD), Ghatkopar (337 MLD), Dharavi (418 MLD), Bhandup (215 MLD) and Versova (180 MLD) — for nearly Rs 260 billion.

SC, on February 24, has passed an order to float and process tenders and to apprise the court of steps taken and report on May 4, with a direction that in the event that any party or bidder has any objections whatsoever to the tendering process, they will be raised before SC and no other court. Such a direction has been passed to obviate any further delay by the grant of stays or injunctions by any other court, thereby impeding the process of inviting bids to set up STPs. The court has directed the municipal commissioner to personally monitor the tender process.
