Jal Jeevan Mission: Govt allocates Rs 10,870 crore for UP

The government has increased the central allocation for the implementation of the Jal Jeevan Mission (JJM) in Uttar Pradesh to Rs 10,870.50 crore. The central government set aside Rs 1,206 crore in 2019-20, which was raised to Rs 2,571 crore in 2020-21.

The allocation for Uttar Pradesh was increased to Rs 2,571 crore in 2020-21. UP had guaranteed the availability of Rs 3,348 crore of central funds with an opening balance of Rs 777 crore. Only Rs 2,053 from this fund could be used by the state government.

In February 2019, the Prime Minister laid the foundation stone for a piped water supply scheme for the rural areas of the Bundelkhand Region and for rural drinking water supply projects for the Mirzapur and Sonbhadra districts of the Vindhyachal region in November 2020.

With a central allocation of Rs 10,870 crore in 2021-22 and an opening balance of Rs 466 crore with the state government, as well as the state's matching share in 2021-22, and a shortfall of Rs 1,263 crore in 2019-20 and 2020-21, the total assured fund available for the implementation of JJM in the state is approximately Rs 23,937 crore.

In 2021-22, Uttar Pradesh will receive Rs 4,324 crore as the 15th FC tied grant for water and sanitation to Rural Local Bodies/ PRIs. For the next five years, up to 2025-26, a total of Rs 22,808 crore has been set aside for water and sanitation.

The Prime Minister's Jal Jeevan Mission, which was announced from the Red Fort on August 15, 2019, is being implemented in partnership with states/UTs to provide tap water to every rural household in the country by 2024. In 2021-22, the total budget for the Jal Jeevan Mission is Rs 50,011 crore.

More than Rs 1 lakh crore is being invested in the rural drinking water supply sector this year, with funds from the state and a grant from the 15th Finance Commission tied to RLBs/PRIs for water and sanitation.
