India has begun to increase the capacity of ports on its western coast in keeping with the need to develop the India-Middle East-Europe Economic Corridor (IMEEC).  In this context, construction of Vadhavan port, the country's largest upcoming greenfield port, is set to begin in December. The port will have a natural draft of 20 metres, allowing it to handle larger vessels and container ships. The IMEEC will connect ports on India's west coast with Fujairah in the UAE. Additionally, a container terminal at Tuna Terka in Kandla will be established to handle more containers. While capacities of the currently operational ports on the western coast, JNPT, Kandla, Mumbai and Mundra, are being augmented, the Rs 655 billion Vadhavan port will make India fully ready to meet additional demand generated by the IMEEC. The new port has a natural draft of about 20 metres near the shore, making it possible for it to handle bigger vessels. It will enable the call of container vessels of 16,000-25,000 twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs) capacity, giving advantages of economies of scale and reducing logistics cost.
