Pune Metro Line 3 adopts innovative third rail system

Pune Metro Line 3, a significant urban transportation project, is making strides with the introduction of the Third Rail System, a first for Pune. This innovative technology revolutionises the metro's electrical power supply, enhancing sustainability and reliability. The project reflects Pune's commitment to modernising public transit and sets a precedent for future metro developments. Pune Metropolitan Region Development Authority (PMRDA) is overseeing the Hinjewadi to Shivajinagar route project on a Public Private Partnership (PPP) basis, with the Tata Group establishing Pune IT City Metro Rail Limited as an SPV for implementation.

The Third Rail System employs a rail with distinctive yellow markings alongside the tracks, enabling trains to make direct contact with a conductor rail, ensuring an uninterrupted power supply. Pune Metro Line 3's adoption of this technology aligns with its commitment to innovation and sustainability, offering advantages like minimal disruption from birds and kites compared to traditional overhead equipment systems.
