Metro 2A & 7 to commence its commercial run soon

Phase 1 of Metro 2A and Metro 7 to start its commercial run shortly as Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) has finalised the applicable documents for submission before the Commissioner of Metro Railway Safety (CMRS).

The approval of CMRS is compulsory before beginning the commercial run of Metro networks. Metropolitan commissioner SVR Srinivas told the media that he inked the relevant documents that need to be presented before CRMS.

A senior authority told the media that the system is set to begin the commercial run. They have concluded all the work, except some minor civil works at a few stations. The first phase spanning 20 km is between Dahanukarwadi of Line 2A to Aarey of Line 7 (18 stations). Both these Metro lines are likely to decrease vehicular traffic by 25%. MMRDA had expected to run these lines by October 2019. Later, the last date was extended to December 2020.

The pandemic in early 2020 resulted in a lockdown and due to labourers going to their native place work had come to a halt. The commercial works were later aimed to begin from October 2021 between Kamraj Nagar and Aarey via Dahisar on both lines. The last date for commissioning the entire stretch of lines 2A and 7 was previously set on January 1, 2022. MMRDA intends to operate services with 11 rakes at a frequency of 15 to 20 minutes initially. As and when rakes get added, the frequency will surge to five minutes per train.
