Godrej, Indian Railways tie-up for quicker assembling of coaches

Godrej has declared a partnership with Indian Railways to help decrease the time taken to assemble a coach to half, which is 12 hours. It is looking for Rs 100 crore revenue from the segment of the industrial machine in the next three years.

Godrej & Boyce flagship subsidiary Godrej Tooling will design and develop the universal coach assembly station as a native solution for the fabrication of coach assembly at Latur in Maharashtra in the Marathwada Rail Coach Factory.

The universal coach assembly station will shorten the time to assemble a coach to 12 hours from 24 hours.

The partnership of Godrej & Boyce with Rail Vikas Nigam Ltd started in the year 2019 with the Rail Vikas Nigam Ltd awarding the project of developing the universal shell body assembly fixture, Godrej Tooling for the then upcoming Marathwada Rail coach Factory at Latur.

The fixture would largely aid the Indian Railways by improving production, deskilling operations and increasing productivity of the line by 100%.

It is capable of welding different variants of coaches like MEMU, LHB, and EMU type coaches through flexibility in resting level pads and slides and clamping because of the integration of the auto welder setup.

Pankaj Abhyankar, Business head of Godrej Tooling, told the media that their team executed extensive studies of the current manufacturing processes, which included in-depth interactions with the Integrated Coach Factory (ICF) factory personnel in Chennai and that it helped them design the flexible Universal Coach Assembly station with an automated welding arrangement which can accommodate multiple coach variants.

Through its Industrial Machines (IM) line of business, Godrej Tooling provides specialised solutions, including automation of jigs & fixtures, welding and robotics, material handling for a wide range of manufacturing activities for enhancing productivity in Indian Railways and metro rail sectors.
