Navi Mumbai Metro to begin passenger service by March-end

The City and Industrial Development Corporation (Cidco) is optimistic that the much-awaited Navi Mumbai Metro will begin passenger service by the end of March. The Metro was supposed to open in December, but it was postponed due to safety concerns.

Following a two-day inspection by the Commissioner of Metro Railway Safety (CMRS) on January 17-18, the railway board approved the Navi Mumbai Metro's rolling stock, which includes coaches and operational equipment, on Friday.

The Navi Mumbai Metro is now awaiting the CMRS's civil work inspection, which will be the final approval for the commuter service's launch.

A Cidco official said that it is on track now that the most important certification has been completed. The assets have already been handed over to Maha Metro for maintenance. By the end of next month, the Navi Mumbai Metro phase 1 from Central Park to Pendhar, covering a 5.14 km stretch between stations 7 and 11, should be operational.

The railway board has given Cidco permission to use the rolling stock of the Navi Mumbai Metro. This is a significant step forward in the commissioning of the Navi Mumbai Metro Phase 1 of line 1 (between Central Park and Pendhar) will be ready for operations once the Navi Mumbai Metro receives civil clearance, according to Cidco MD Dr Sanjay Mukherjee.

The Navi Mumbai Metro's first phase stretches 11 kilometers from Belapur to Pendhar.
