NHAI addresses Rajiv Chowk Traffic woes with comprehensive plan

In an effort to alleviate the persistent traffic congestion at Rajiv Chowk, one of the busiest intersections in Gurgaon, the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) is in the process of formulating a comprehensive plan. This response comes as a result of the increasing traffic chaos witnessed at this junction, primarily due to the convergence of the Delhi-Jaipur highway (NH-8) and the Delhi-Mumbai Expressway.

Officials from NHAI have revealed that they are currently conducting an extensive study to identify measures that can help reduce traffic conflicts arising from the coexistence of long-distance travellers and local commuters at Rajiv Chowk. This issue was recently discussed during a coordination committee meeting led by the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Gurugram Metropolitan Development Authority (GMDA), PC Meena. Meena emphasised the urgency of the situation and instructed officials from both NHAI and GMDA to devise a strategy to decongest the area.

According to an NHAI spokesperson, a traffic assessment has already been carried out, highlighting the need for interventions to minimise conflict points. However, this task poses several challenges due to the existing infrastructure and limited space. Additionally, there are plans for the construction of a RapidX station near the junction, which adds further complexity to the situation. Consequently, NHAI is actively conducting a study to improve the flow of intercity traffic, though the specific structure to be built remains undecided.

The opening of the Delhi-Mumbai Expressway earlier this year has significantly increased the traffic volume at Rajiv Chowk. Currently, travelers heading towards the expressway make a left turn at Rajiv Chowk via a slip road, while those heading for Delhi merge with local traffic beneath the flyover. Typically, interchanges are built in urban areas to facilitate the movement of long-distance traffic, accommodating local transportation needs and reducing urban congestion. However, such a development is still pending at Rajiv Chowk.

GMDA CEO Meena informed TOI that both authorities are working closely together to alleviate the congestion at Rajiv Chowk. He confirmed their commitment to exploring all possible solutions to improve traffic flow at this critical junction. The plan is currently in its early stages, and the decision on whether to construct an underpass, an elevated structure, or a combination of both will be based on the findings of the study and the availability of land.
