New Chandigarh bypass completion expected by May 2024

Commuters from Mohali and Kharar in Punjab will soon have a more direct route to New Chandigarh, bypassing the need to pass through Chandigarh. The 9-kilometer bypass road, part of the Airport Road (PR7) extension project, is set to be finished by May 2024.

The bypass will initiate at the dividing road of Sector 120/125, Sunny Enclave, Kharar, and conclude at the PR4 road in New Chandigarh (Mullanpur), reducing the distance between the two towns by around 5 kilometres. This development aims to alleviate traffic congestion in Chandigarh.

Additionally, air travellers to and from New Chandigarh will no longer need to navigate through Chandigarh, providing further relief. The project will also benefit commuters from Ambala and Delhi, granting them direct access to Baddi in Himachal Pradesh. Despite the initial May 2021 deadline, the Rs 1.5 billion project is now three years behind schedule.

The Greater Mohali Area Development Authority (GMADA) acquired approximately 120 acres in Jandpur, Hasanpur, Bahawalpur, Ranai Majra, and Saini Majra villages, facing a hurdle in Palheri village where landowners contested the compensation.

In January 2024, the Punjab and Haryana High Court lifted the construction stay near Palheri village, allowing GMADA to resume work. However, the acquisition of a 30-meter plot of forest land near Thaska village is still pending as of the February 6, 2024, meeting.

Gurjit Singh, Executive Engineer (XEN) at GMADA, stated, ?We are making efforts to commence this 9 km stretch within the next three months. Construction has started near Palheri village, and we have approached the forest department for permission to build on the 30m stretch under their possession. We have received a positive response as the file has progressed online. This 9km road will serve as a Chandigarh bypass, reducing travel time for commuters heading to New Chandigarh.?

In May 2023, GMADA Chief Administrator Rajiv Kumar Gupta inspected the construction progress of PR 4 and the extension of PR 7 roads, urging officials to ensure timely completion. On May 26, 2023, Gupta visited project sites, emphasising the critical role these roads play in enhancing the area's connectivity.

India must focus on building resilient road infrastructure

Vadodara-based firm Zydex Industries has developed a silane nanotechnology-based product for road construction that can resist cracking under heavy traffic loads and cyclic weather. The company is using nano-polymer and silane to make roads free of potholes and cracks, thanks to their anti-strip property and enhanced resistance to moisture damage. The company has also developed a technology to make aggregates waterproof, thus forming a skin-like layer that is water-resistant and prevents the formation of potholes. Himanshu Agarwal, Chief Operating Officer, Zydex Industries, speaks about g..
