Mumbai’s First Land-based Cable-stayed Bridge Set to Open at Reay Road

Construction of the bridge began in February 2022 to establish a direct link between Byculla East, Mahul Road, and the Eastern Freeway. The structure extends over the historic Reay Road station and the Harbour railway line, enhancing connectivity in the area. The project involved extensive coordination among civic authorities, necessitating the relocation of a railway ticket counter, 130 chawls, and 15 sheds to make way for the bridge.

Beyond its core function of improving traffic movement, the bridge incorporates modern infrastructure elements. It is equipped with architectural LED lighting, enhancing its visual appeal, and a Bridge Health Monitoring System to ensure structural safety and maintenance efficiency.

With the majority of construction work completed, only the final adjustments remain before the bridge is officially opened to the public. Once operational, it is expected to significantly ease congestion in the area, providing a smoother and more efficient transit route. As Mumbai’s second cable-stayed bridge, the structure is poised to enhance urban mobility while adding to the city’s evolving infrastructure landscape.
