India explores economically viable electric highways

Union Minister Nitin Gadkari discusses plans for electric highways, emphasizing their economic feasibility and potential for private sector investment.

Union Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari stated that the government is actively working on the development of electric highways, emphasizing their economic viability. Gadkari has previously expressed his aspiration to create India's first electric highway connecting Delhi and Jaipur.

He elaborated on the concept of the electric highway, explaining that the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) would grant the right of way. Gadkari disclosed discussions with the Power Ministry to secure electricity at a reduced rate of Rs 3.50 per unit, as compared to the commercial rate of Rs 11 per unit.

Gadkari highlighted the feasibility of electric highways, suggesting that NHAI would provide opportunities for private-sector investors willing to participate in the project. The construction of electric cables would be carried out by private investors, and NHAI would levy an electric tariff, akin to toll charges.

Electric highways offer electric traction for vehicles, similar to railway systems in several countries like Sweden and Norway. This technology involves power cables that vehicles equipped with the necessary technology can utilize for traction. Gadkari mentioned an ongoing pilot project for an electric highway in Nagpur.

He emphasized the rapid growth of India's automobile sector, which has become a source of pride for the country. The automobile industry's size has expanded from Rs 4.15 lakh crore in 2014 to Rs 12.50 lakh crore presently. Gadkari underscored the importance of finding solutions to reduce the country's increasing reliance on fossil fuel imports.
