GMDA unveils redevelopment plan to ease traffic in Old Gurgaon

GMDA has unveiled plans to revitalise two key arterial stretches connecting NH-8 and Dwarka Expressway, aiming to streamline traffic flow in the region. The comprehensive project encompasses widening lanes, introducing flyovers or underpasses, and constructing footpaths. Once executed, the initiative is poised to enhance connectivity and offer an alternative route for commuters.

The two targeted stretches, IFFCO Chowk to Mahavir Chowk (4.8 km) and Old Railway Road to Dwarka Expressway via Basai (6.1 km), have undergone a preliminary study, marking a significant step in GMDA's efforts to alleviate congestion in Old Gurgaon. Critical intersections and road segments will be identified for lane expansion, eliminating bottlenecks and reducing travel time between NH-8 and Dwarka Expressway. Flyovers or underpasses are planned for strategic locations such as Basai Road, Old Railway Road, and Sukhrali to facilitate smooth vehicular movement.

In addition to fortifying and widening these stretches, GMDA envisions incorporating on-street parking, constructing footpaths, and installing utility ducts to curb unnecessary digging. With project details in the finalisation stage, GMDA officials anticipate floating a tender post-approval.

Upon completion, the initiative promises improved connectivity from NH-8 to Dwarka Expressway, presenting an alternative route for commuters traveling between Jhajjar and the city. Currently, most commuters rely on the Basai flyover leading to Hero Honda Chowk.

These stretches traverse densely populated areas comprising various sectors, unplanned colonies, wholesale markets, and commercial establishments. In contrast to the more organised infrastructure development on the opposite side of the highway, Old Gurgaon grapples with narrow, encroached roads, and frequent traffic jams. The redevelopment project aims to address these challenges and usher in a new era of improved traffic management and urban planning.
