Chandigarh to recarpet 431 km city roads in FY21

The engineering department of the Chandigarh Municipal Corporation (CMC) has allocated a budget of Rs 70 crore for recarpeting 431 km of city roads in FY21.

The municipal corporation plans to finish the tender process during the monsoon season, allowing recarpeting to begin as soon as the rains stop.

The civic body has prepared division-by-division estimates to cover all roads in the three divisions and road wing of the engineering department that require re-carpeting. Sources reveal that a few parking areas, in addition to roads, require recarpeting.

As per the records, only half of the allotted road work worth Rs 36 crore has been completed so far, covering approximately 221 km of road.

With the monsoon approaching in a few days, it appears that previously scheduled works will not be completed this week, despite the best efforts of the engineering department.

According to an official, work worth Rs 36 crore was assigned in March and has been ongoing since then. In addition, some unfinished work has been completed.

Contractors have faced a labour shortage, causing work to be slow. They are currently working at maximum capacity, but only about half of the allotted works of around 110 km out of 221 km have been completed.

The deposit works include ongoing and previous road re-carpeting projects, for which the MC received approximately Rs 70 crore in 2019 from the Chandigarh administration. The UT also released funds in 2019 for additional deposit work.

It includes improvements to the water storage tank at Sector 39, the installation of lights in dark spots throughout the city, and the development of nine villages, among other things.

The civic body will be responsible for managing funds for newly planned road re-carpeting projects.

Airfare hike not tied to increased airport charges; ACI

The Airports Council International (ACI) stated that rising airfares are not linked to increased airport charges. Airport charges are crucial for infrastructure development within the commercial aviation ecosystem, but they remain a minimal part of the overall airfare. Stefano Baronci, Director General of ACI Asia Pacific & Middle East, emphasized that airports are infrastructure-intensive businesses, with costs dominated by maintaining essential infrastructure such as runways, taxiways, aprons, and terminal buildings. He noted that neglecting the capital expenditure needed to support future g..
