BMC progresses on Mumbai's underground sewage tunnel for flood control

In a significant development, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) achieved a major milestone by successfully excavating a 1.8 km section of the underground sewage tunnel. This tunnel, part of the Mumbai Sewage Disposal Project (MSDP), spans a total length of 6.7km and is being constructed beneath the Mithi River.

The primary objective behind the tunnel's construction is to enhance the Mithi River's carrying capacity and improve its water quality, ultimately contributing to the mitigation of floods in Mumbai.

This underground sewage tunnel will stretch from Bapat Nullah, near the Santacruz-Chembur Link Road (SCLR), to the Dharavi sewage treatment plant. It will facilitate the transportation of approximately 168 million liters of contaminated water from various drains into the sewage treatment plant located in Dharavi.

Once the sewage is treated, it will be discharged into the creek at Mahim Nature Park, as stated by civic officials. The tunnel project has been divided into three phases, with mining operations commencing in November of the previous year. The completion of the entire project is anticipated by September 2025.
