Automobile firms to manufacture flex-fuel vehicles within 6 months

Minister of Road Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari told the media that automobile firms would begin producing flex-fuel vehicle variants within six months, and most vehicles in India will operate on 100% ethanol.

Flex-fuel, or flexible fuel, is an alternative fuel with a mixture of gasoline and methanol or ethanol. The government is allowing the use of different alternative fuels to move from fossil fuels. To expedite the introduction of flex-fuel vehicles, a Production Linked Incentive (PLI) scheme has incorporated automobile and auto components of flex-fuel engines.

NITI Aayog, after acknowledging the strong foundation for the ethanol blending programme (EBP), has developed the roadmap for ethanol blending for the term, 2020-2025.

Speaking at 'ET Global Business Summit,' Gadkari said firms such as TVS Motor and Bajaj Auto have already begun making flex-fuel engines for their two and three-wheelers.

Gadkari additionally said that the government is working to promote the use of green hydrogen and other alternative fuels.

The Minister of Road Transport and Highways said that the government targets a pace of 50 km per day for national highways.

Gadkari said that due to Covid-induced disruptions, the development of national highways faced some issues.

The pace of national highway (NH) development in the nation reached a record 37 km per day in 2020-21.
