New loaded ATC tower readies for operation at Kolkata airport

The construction phase completed, the new technical building and air traffic control (ATC) tower at Kolkata airport are set to be equipped with state-of-the-art technology, ushering in a new era of aviation safety. Following the conclusion of construction, preparations are underway to integrate the latest communication, navigation, and surveillance gadgets. A team led by ATC general manager S D Burman will oversee the transition process, ensuring a smooth shift from the existing facility to the advanced tower.

Airport officials shared that the new technical building and ATC tower will soon be handed over to the Airports Authority Of India (AAI), marking a significant milestone in enhancing operational capabilities. A turnkey project contractor will take charge of procuring and installing the cutting-edge technology, marking the first instance of a comprehensive project being assigned to a single vendor for seamless integration.

The upgraded air traffic navigation (ATN) complex will see substantial expansion, with the area control facility doubling in size from 7,640 sq ft to 14,316 sq ft. Atop the tower, the visual control room area will also increase from 1,260 sq ft to 2,475 sq ft. Notably, the tower's height will rise from 112 ft to 184 ft, and the tower's sturdy glass panes, measuring 37.5mm in thickness, are designed to withstand high-velocity winds.

The new technical building will not only house advanced technology but also offer enhanced facilities, including a medical inspection room, child care space, fitness amenities, and relaxation areas. In addition, separate rooms for activities like gym, billiards, table tennis, and yoga will be available, along with dedicated areas for controllers and pilots to interact. A de-stressing lounge will further cater to the well-being of controllers.

This transformation aims to ensure secure flight operations, as the facility will feature the latest navigation and surveillance equipment. The installation includes an updated automation system, advanced voice communication, very high-frequency antennas, ground guidance, and surveillance equipment for aircraft and vehicles. The overall investment for these upgrades is projected to be between Rs 3.5 billion and Rs 4 billion.

With the rapid advancements in automation systems and communication technology, this transition aligns with global trends and experts' recommendations to enhance aviation safety. The new internet protocol-based voice communication system and redundant VHF antennas demonstrate the commitment to ensuring fail-safe operations, exemplifying a robust step toward bolstering aviation security and efficiency.
