Feasibility study for constructing APM at IGI airport conducted

Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International (IGI) Airport is all set to go world-class with its inter-terminal air train. A feasibility study for constructing the automated people mover or the inter-terminal air train has been reportedly conducted.

Reports suggest, Delhi International Airport, the airport operation, has conducted the feasibility study and cost estimation for undertaking the project. However, the airport operator may rake a while to achieve the financial closure for the project. The estimated cost of the inter-terminal APM project is reportedly Rs 15 billion to 20 billion.

The huge cost involved in the construction of the project has reportedly slowed down the project work. That said, new roads, underpass and transport mediums currently available between IGIA's terminals have considerably reduced the need for such a system.

The air train network is expected to have four stations, with one station at the cargo terminal. The four proposed stations with a total length of the air train network of 5.1 km are Terminal 1 station, Aero City station, Cargo/Commercial station and an STP station near T3 and the upcoming T4. Of the 5.1 km, 1.2 km is expected to be underground.

At present, various models are being explored for developing the APM and in order to implement the project, DIAL has reportedly approached the world’s leading APM providers.

Meanwhile, the expanding work of Terminal 1, Terminal 3, fourth runway, elevated taxiway, etc. is expected to be over by mid-2022.
