Delhi airport's new terminal, fourth runway to be operational in Sept

The new terminal and fourth runway at Delhi International Airport will open in September, according to Aviation Secretary Rajiv Bansal. Indira Gandhi International Airport will be the only airport in India with four runways.

"In September 2023, Delhi Airport will have a new terminal and the fourth runway will be operational." "With a renewed focus on innovation, we are preparing for better infrastructure and better connectivity in the Indian aviation sector," he said. The comments were made by the aviation secretary at the EU-India Aviation Summit.

According to officials familiar with the project, the fourth runway will be approximately 4,400 m long and 75 m wide. It is slightly shorter than the third runway (designated 29/11). "The fourth runway is expected to ease the pressure of a likely rise in flight operations. The new runway will considerably cut the waiting time for flights to land and take off," an official said.

The new runway is part of the Delhi airport's Phase III-A expansion plan. The plan's original deadline was mid-to-end 2022. DIAL (Delhi International Airport), a joint venture majority-owned by the GMR Group, announced in 2019 an investment of Rs 9,800 crore to upgrade the existing Terminal 1, build a fourth runway, and undertake other development works to increase the airport's capacity to 100 million passengers per year from the current 66 million. The coronavirus hampered runway construction, according to the official.

The EU-India Aviation Summit will focus on EU-India air transport relations and mutually shared challenges and opportunities such as post-Covid air traffic recovery, increasing sustainability, maintaining safety, and developing unmanned aircraft systems.

The summit will bring together top-level policymakers, industry executives and stakeholders from both the European Union and India. "There are several fronts on which India and the EU cooperate and this summit marks the beginning of that journey," he said.
