Adani to invest $1.2 bn for Lucknow Airport expansion

In order to increase Lucknow Airport's annual passenger handling capacity from 4 million passengers per year (MPPA) to 39 MPPA, the Adani group will invest 107,000 million in the airport's expansion. The Union Environment Ministry approved the airport's expansion plan on December 15. The expansion's deadline, however, was not mentioned in the plan that was presented to the government. The scheme and the clearance have been examined by Business Standard.

Prior reports indicated that the Adani company would triple the Ahmedabad airport's capacity for passenger handling between 2023 and 2027 in order to transform it into a regional hub.

The Chaudhary Charan Singh International Airport in Lucknow has a total land size of 509.41 hectares (1258.80 acres), making it one of the most land-constrained airports in India, according to the plan of Lucknow International Airport Limited (LIAL), a corporation owned by the Adani group.

LIAL has since suggested that CCSIA should be expanded over a 457.1-hectare area.

The international terminal (T1) and domestic terminal are the two passenger terminals that CCSIA currently operates (T2). West of Terminal T1, a new integrated terminal building (T3) is being built, the statement said.

The plan stated that in addition to T3, a new terminal building (T4) with related infrastructure, support facilities, and utilities will be constructed to support 39 MPPA. According to a presentation made by the Adani Group in October, CCSIA can currently handle 4 MPPA.

According to the LIAL concept, a cargo complex with a total size of 23.14 hectares will be built at CCSIA to accommodate cargo up to 0.25 million tonnes annually. The Airports Authority of India have lost ownership of CCSIA to the Adani group in November 2020. (AAI).

The expansion project will directly and indirectly employ roughly 2,000 people during its construction phase, and once it is operating, it will employ about 25,000 people, according to the plan. It further stated that the "project cost" is 107,000 million.

In response to the newspaper's request for comment, the Adani group did not provide any. A multi-modal transport hub will also be built, it was announced, with curbside amenities for travellers arriving at the airport from nearby areas, metro connectivity, multi-level parking, cityside check-in and self-bag drop facilities, and more.

LIAL has suggested a multi-level parking structure with 4,000 parking places, it was observed. For passengers and greeters to park in multi-level parking and go down to the pickup/drop-off kerbs, it was noted that pedestrian walkways were intended to link those areas to the terminal's departure and arrival zones.

39 MPPA would require about 9.6 million litres of water per day (MLD), the report stated. The Uttar Pradesh government or borewells will provide 4.5 MLD, while the sewage treatment plant will provide the remaining 5.1 MLD for flushing and landscaping.

The Adani group has gradually extended its involvement in the aviation industry over the past few years. Through a competitive bidding process, the AAI leased airports at Lucknow, Jaipur, Mangaluru, Thiruvananthapuram, Ahmedabad, and Guwahati in February 2019. Through vigorous bidding, the Adani group was successful in obtaining the 50-year operating licences for all six.

It purchased Air Works, the second-oldest aircraft maintenance, repair, and overhaul facility in India, in October of this year for a price tag of 4000 million.
