In the next couple of years, India’s metro rail network, which is expanding at an unprecedented pace, is likely to become the second largest in the world, leaving behind the US. With India aiming for 5,000 km metro route length by 2047 in 100 cities (from 900 km across 20 cities in April 2023), FIRST Construction Council - in partnership with CONSTRUCTION WORLD and INFRASTRUCTURE TODAY magazines – will be hosting the 2nd Metro Rail Conference on Feb 28, 2024 at Courtyard by Marriott, Mumbai, to bring together the industry, policymakers, and other stakeholders to discuss the sustainable, profitable roadmap for the metro rail sector.

“India boasts the third-largest metro network globally, with operational lines in 20 cities across 900 km. By 2047, it is targeting 5000 km of operational metro rail in 100 cities. While the metro construction is on overdrive, there are challenges surrounding high investment costs and lower-than-anticipated ridership putting the metro projects at risk. These issues need in-depth analysis and timely solutions for making metro rail projects viable. Metro Rail Conference 2024 – a collaborative platform – will explore the pressing issues surrounding the industry, emphasising its viability and potential expansion,” said Pratap Padode, Founder & President, FIRST Construction Council, highlighting the purpose of the conference.

The primary focus of the conference – with the theme of “Accelerating the Lifeline of Urban Transport” - is to engage in crucial conversations regarding the sustainability, growth, and financial resilience of the Indian metro rail sector. Some of the topics to be discussed are: “Business Opportunities in Forthcoming Metro Projects”, "Technological Innovations in Metro Rail Infrastructure", "Smart Metro Cities: Integrating Metro Rail with Urban Development", and "Improving Ridership for Metro Rail Network", among others.

The first edition of the Metro Rail Conference in 2023 was a great success, which speaks not only to the critical importance metro sector plays in enhancing public mobility but also to the unique position of India to enable this change. Building on this successful inaugural edition, the 2nd Metro Rail Conference 2024 is all set to scale new heights with participation of over 150 visitors, more than 10 metro rail corporations, and 25+ speakers.
