Top 5 projects; upgrading mumbai’s infrastructure

Mumbai, India's financial capital, is one of the world's largest metropolitan areas, spanning 603.4 square kilometres. With a population of over 20 million people, as the city expands, commute times seem to take longer with each passing decade.

A long-term plan to transform the city's economy is currently underway, with the construction of expressways, roads, flyovers, and metros that will go a long way towards addressing one of the city's key challenges, shortening commute times for residents while ensuring world-class facilities.

So, without further ado, let us know about each of these projects and see what they have in store for the people of Mumbai.

1. Mumbai Coastal Road

29.80 km The Mumbai Coastal Road Project is an access-controlled motorway under construction that connects Princess Street Flyover in South Bombay to Kandivali in the northern suburbs.

Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation / Municipal Corporation of Greater Mumbai is building the 10.58 km Phase 1 (southern section) of the project between Marine Drive and Bandra Worli Sea-link.

Phase 2 (northern section) roughly 19 km of the project will connect Bandra and Kandivali. Phase 2 involves constructing a 19.22 km northern extension between Bandra – Versova – Kandivali

The project’s foundation stone was laid in December 2018. Phase – 1 is expected to be completed and opened in January 2024.

General Consultant for the project is AECOM. Project comprises of 3 civil packages.

    2. MTHL (Mumbai Trans Harbour Link)
    21.8 km Mumbai Trans Harbour Link by MMRDA is an under construction 6 lane access-controlled sea bridge with a route alignment connecting Sewri in Mumbai with Chirle in Navi Mumbai, Maharashtra. The project’s foundation stone was laid by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in December 2016. The project is expected to be completed and opened in August 2023. Once completed MTHL will be the longest bridge / sea link in India. the estimated Cost of the project is Rs. 17,843 crores. Out of which 85% of the project’s construction is being financed by JICA.

    MTHL will feature an intelligence transport system and the other amenities required for a marine bridge. The traffic conditions on the stretch will be monitored and managed from the traffic control centre with the help of CCTV cameras and related facilities installed on the stretch. Variable message signs will also be installed to display appropriate information for the bridge users.

    The bridge will be equipped with noise barriers near Sewri mud flat area and view barriers at Bhabha Atomic Research Centre to fulfil environmental criteria.

    3. Goregaon-Mulund Link Road
    Goregaon-Mulund Link Road is a 12-km long road infrastructure project that will connect Mulund directly to Goregaon. The project is expected to cost Rs 10,100.91 crore. The project was planned out by BMC in four phases. Phase 1 is anticipated to be finished by May 2023, and Phase 2 is 65% finished. Two additional phases are ongoing. As a result, May 2028 is the projected completion date. After, Ghodbunder road, Jogeshwari-Vikhroli Link Road, and Santacruz Chembur Link Road, GMLR is the fourth east to the west corridor in Mumbai.

    It will reduce the traffic congestion and cut down the travelling time. As of now, it takes 80 minutes to travel from Mulund to Goregaon. Once the new road of GMLR is operational, this travel time will be reduced to as quick as 20 minutes.

    4. Navi mumbai international airport
    Navi Mumbai International Airport at Panvel & Ulwe, Maharashtra is being developed with a 4-phase master plan to handle over 60 million passengers per annum in the future. Prime Minister Narendra Modi laid the airport’s foundation stone on February 18, 2018. The Airport is expected to be opened and inaugurated in August 2024.     Larsen & Toubro was awarded its Phase 1’s construction contract in August 2019. This includes cut and fill works, terminal construction work including departure and arrival forecourts, airfield development works that include a 3,700-metre-long runway, apron systems, taxiway systems, airfield ground lighting and other facilities, landside facilities covering roads, multilevel car parking, utilities, and support facilities.

    5. Mumbai Metro
    Mumbai Metro with 14 lines is an urban Mass Rapid Transit System being built to serve Mumbai, Maharashtra’s capital, and largest city. In an upcoming development, the Prime Minister inaugurated two metro lines on January 19, 2023. The newly developed metro lines are Metro line 7 and Metro Line 2A. The estimated cost of developing the metro line is approximately 12,600 crores. Metro line 2A (yellow line) connects Dahisar East and DN Nagar in Andheri West which is around 18.6 km long, metro line 7 links Andheri East to Dahisar East which is around 16.5 Km long.

    Now let us know about all the 14 lines of Mumbai metro.
    - Blue Line 1
    Line 1 connects Versova in the Western Suburbs to Ghatkopar in the Central Suburbs, covering 11.4 kilometres. It is fully elevated, and consists of 12 stations. The line opened for service on 8 June 2014.

    - Yellow Line 2
    This corridor is executed in two phases i.e., 2A and 2B. The 18.589 km long 2A corridor is being executed by DMRC on behalf of MMRDA. The corridor has 17 stations (Dahisar (West) to D N Nagar)

    The 2B corridor is 23.643 km long. This section will have 22 stations (D N Nagar to Mandale), work on which began in mid-2018.

    - Aqua Line 3
    This corridor is entirely built underground, and is 33.50 km long, with 27 stations. The metro line will connect the Cuffe Parade business district in the south of Mumbai with SEEPZ and Aarey in the north.

    - Green Line 4
    The line 4 of Mumbai Metro is envisaged to be a 32.32 km long elevated corridor, covering 32 stations from Kasarvadavali (near Thane) in the north to Wadala in the south. This project will help connect the city of Thane with Mumbai with an alternate mode of public transport. It is expected to get completed by 2025.

    - Orange Line 5
    The 24.9 km-long Thane-Bhiwandi-Kalyan Metro-V corridor will have 17 stations. It will be totally an elevated corridor. It will connect Thane to Bhiwandi and Kalyan in the eastern suburbs, with further extension to Taloja in Navi Mumbai that is line 12.

    - Pink Line 6
    The 14.47 km long Lokhandwala-Jogeshwari-Vikhroli-Kanjurmarg Metro-VI corridor will have 13 stations. It will be an elevated corridor. It will connect Lokhandwala Complex in Andheri in the western suburbs to Vikhroli and Kanjurmarg in the eastern suburbs.

    - Red Line 7
    This corridor is 16.475 km long, and runs from Dahisar (East) in the north to Andheri (East) in the south, with a further extension till Bhayander in the north, and Mumbai International Airport Terminal 2 in the south. The line is partially elevated, and partially underground

    - Gold Line 8
    This is a proposed metro line between the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport and the under-construction Navi Mumbai International Airport. It will connect Mumbai airport to upcoming Navi Mumbai airport, and its length would be approx. 32 km.

    - Red Line 9
    Metro line 9 will ply between Dahisar-Mira Bhayander route. It will have 10 stations all elevated. This Under Construction Metro of Dahisar to Mira-Bhayandar will cut down approximately 30 km of travel distance between the Mira-Bhayandar and Mumbai suburbs. It is an extension of Line 7.

    - Green Line 10
    Metro line 10, is a proposed 9 km elevated extension of Metro 4 from Gaimukh to Chatrapati Shivaji. It is expected to be completed by 2025. - Green Line 11
    Metro 11, which connects Wadala with CSMT. This would be an extension to Metro 4. The length of the line is 11.4 km. The line will be partially underground, with 8 underground and 2 elevated stations. It will be completed by October 2026.

    - Orange Line 12
    Metro Line 12, which will connect Kalyan with Taloja. It is an extension of line 5. In another boost to connectivity, the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) has decided to connect Mumbai, Thane, and Navi Mumbai with a Metro line. Construction began in August 2020 and It will be completed by October 2024.

    - Purple Line 13
    It is a proposed metro project to connect Mira Road with Virar. The project length is 23 km. The DPR is created for this route This line will be operational by October 2026.

    - Magenta Line 14
    It is an approved metro project to connect Vikhroli with Kanjurmarg and further to Ambernath-Badlapur. It will have an intersection at Kanjurmarg with Line 6, the Pink Line. This project is now at the DPR stage. The project length is 45 km. It will be completed by October 2026.
