TN Shifts to Monthly Power Bills from Aug 2025

Tamil Nadu will transition to a monthly electricity billing system for domestic users starting August 2025, following the installation of smart meters across the state.

The move comes after growing demands from various stakeholders for more frequent billing. Minister Senthilbalaji confirmed the shift during a recent budget discussion, stating that the transition would commence once smart meters are in place.

A tender has already been issued for the installation of 3 crore smart meters, with the first phase covering 1 crore domestic connections. Contracts are expected to be awarded to 5-6 companies.

The government plans to roll out the system on a trial basis in areas where smart meters have already been installed. The new billing method is expected to provide accurate readings, help consumers track electricity usage monthly, and improve transparency.

With this move, Tamil Nadu will join other states in modernizing its electricity metering system, streamlining the billing process for residents.
