GMADA Launches Dual Carriageway and Stormwater Drainage Projects

The Greater Mohali Area Development Authority (GMADA) has started construction on a dual carriageway stretching from Bawa White House to Kumbra crossing, with completion expected in 2025. This development is part of a larger initiative to upgrade infrastructure in Mohali.

The project also includes installing stormwater drainage systems along the road, which runs between sectors 61/70-62/69 and the Bawa White House crossing (NIPER Road). This route passes through areas with encroached government land, where residents have set up kitchen gardens and parking spaces. The dual carriageway project is one of three major road expansion efforts in Mohali. The expansion of the shopping street from Phase VIII to Phase XI is nearing completion, with service roads planned to meet GMADA specifications.

The expanded roads will provide alternative routes for local drivers. Work on cost assessments for the other two roads—sector 61/70-62/69 to Bawa White House crossing (NIPER Road) and Mohali village to SSP residence crossing—is also underway. These thoroughfares connect various parts of Mohali, including sectors 61/70-62/69 to Bawa White House, Mohali village to YPS crossing, and sectors 62/51 and 63/50 to sectors 65/48.

A senior GMADA official stated, “The road designs include modern amenities such as street lighting, traffic signals at key junctions, and designated parking areas. Service roads will provide access to local businesses while keeping the main carriageway clear for traffic.” Detailed traffic surveys were conducted to assess peak-hour volumes and patterns, helping design suitable road widths and junction layouts. Provisions for future traffic growth and environmental considerations are also part of the planning, including tree transplantation and compensatory planting. Green spaces and landscaping will be added to enhance the area’s visual appeal.

Deputy Mayor Kuljit Singh Bedi has requested the chief administrator of GMADA, the chief engineer, and the MC commissioner to extend the stormwater drainage system to Mataur traffic lights to reduce waterlogging during the monsoon season. Currently, the drainage pipes are being laid up to Kumbra lights. Bedi stated that extending the system would aid rainwater drainage from Phase 7, Sector 70, Sector 71, Phase 3B2, and Mataur at minimal additional cost.
