AM/NS India to invest Rs 273 crore on zero liquid discharge

In response to concerns that trade effluent discharged into the Tapi estuary in Surat district from its steel plants at Hazira was causing pollution above permissible limits, Arcelor-Mittal Nippon Steel India (AM/NS) has announced a Rs 2.73 billion investment in zero liquid discharge. The Gujarat High Court (HC) recently appointed the Indian Institute of Technology Gandhinagar (IIT-Gn) as a court commissioner to determine whether or not trade effluent discharged from AM/NS was causing pollution above permissible limits.

The court acted in response to a public interest lawsuit filed by Surat-based environmental engineer Roshni Patel, who claimed that the steel plant was discharging effluent into the river without properly treating it, causing harm to life in the estuary.
