Mira-Bhayandar civic body launches intelligent transport system

The Mira Bhayandar Municipal Corporation (MBMC) has launched an Intelligent Transport System (ITS) in its fleet of buses to keep in check unruly bus drivers and conductors along with maintaining transportation quality.

The buses will be monitored through a global positioning system (GPS) on the ITS dashboard, which is installed in the control room situated in the premises of the central bus depot in Ghodbunder, Kashimira.

It will not only enable the administration to track the exact location of the buses, collect revenue through the electronic ticketing system, and take up passengers from each route.

The GPS services will also provide real-time bus movement information, keeping watch on bus drivers for over-speeding, unschedule changing of routes, skipping bus stops, and violating the traffic rules such as rash driving and signal crossing.

The public transport authority of MBMC has so far taken action against 19 erring drivers for violating the rules.

Currently, 44 out of the total 62 buses are plying on 14 routes. On average, 23,900 commuters travel in-out of the twin-city daily. Before the lockdown in March 2020, the average number was 40,000 commuters daily.

MBMC has appointed a private agency for operating its buses on a Net Cost Contract (NCC) model, aiming to provide a viable and convenient public transport system.
