Tata Motors to pay Rs 200 cr to PCMC for unregistered properties

Tata Motors (TML), a leading global automobile manufacturer, will have to shell out Rs 200 crore for unregistered properties constructed at its city-based plant on Telco Road in the twin towns.

The Pimpri-Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC) has issued a show-cause notice to the company in this regard.

In a recently conducted survey, PCMC identified 19,648 unregistered properties and took steps against owners who did not register extended properties within civic limits. From this exercise, the civic body intends to collect approximately Rs 350 crore in property tax from defaulters.

Smita Zagade, Assistant Commissioner, PCMC property tax department, commenting on the notice to Tata Motors, said that the company has made constructions on about eight hectares without listing the same with the department. Structures found here involved canteen, serving centres, car parking shed and other sheds, constructed between 2008 and 2016.

PCMC learned about the details of the extended properties according to the documents submitted by the company.

Further, Civic officials said that Tata Motors did not allow PCMC staff inside the premises indicating security purposes, so it was according to the property documents presented by the company itself that the unregistered establishments were unveiled.

Tata Motors said that TML has been paying property tax to PCMC since the start, concerning the property at Bhosari. Also, in FY 2021-22, TML paid the property tax for the first half of the year, according to the bills issued by PCMC.

Since property tax is paid to PCMC according to the bills, it has increased from time to time, there is no question of any delay from the company’s. Some buildings have been built recently. According to the procedure, these buildings will be evaluated by PCMC.

Property tax is among the significant sources of income for the civic body. PCMC recently increased action against unregistered properties, involving not just industries but also malls, marriage halls and hotels.

According to civic norms, it is necessary to notify the civic body of any changes in an existing establishment, since property tax is paid on the area of construction. Owners of the construction have to get official approval and register the same under property change before making any changes.
