Thiruvananthapuram to set up unit to manage construction and demolition waste

As reported, the Thiruvananthapuram Corporation has selected Kalladimugham as the site for storing, processing and recycling of construction and demolition (C&D) waste being generated in the city. Following the declaration of the Construction and Demolition Waste Management Rules three years ago, the city has only now made provisions for C&D waste, in tune to the action plan that is being prepared in compliance with the National Green Tribunal’s orders.

Reportedly, all urban local bodies were notified by the state pollution control board in 2017, that they would be responsible for setting up appropriate C&D waste management infrastructure for their areas.

As per the rules laid down, the corporation will:

  • Determine charges to be levied by waste generators.  All respective charges related to the storage, collection and transportation of waste will be paid by waste generators and in case they produce more than 20 tonne in a day or 300 tonne of waste in a month per project, they will also be liable to pay for processing and disposal.
  • For proposes of municipal solid waste of the city, the C&D waste will be utilised in a sanitary landfill.
  • Demarcate and mark the area around the solid waste processing facility as a no-development zone, which is more than 5 tonne per day of the installed capacity.
  • Maintain a relevant database by means of conducting an audit of C&D waste generated in the city.
