Nine labourers fall to death in Pune in absence of safety gear

Safety of labours is becoming a prime question in Pune after a 13th floor slab in an under construction building recently collapsed leading to the death of nine labourers. Part of a housing complex known as Park Xpress, a project by the Pride Purple construction group, the labourers – who have had to pay the price of unlawful construction – majorly hailed from the Eastern state of Bihar.

It is still not clear in the initial investigation if the labourers were wearing safety harnesses while working at that height or why a safety net was used to stop any casualties. As reported, the workers fell on a grill of a balcony on the first floor, before landing on the ground to a sure death.

However, this accident is a clear case of ‘illicit construction’. It is known (through other sources) that the builders had violated norms by constructing an additional storey (the 13th floor), while the Pune Municipal Corporation had permitted 12 floors plus the basement. Pune Mayor Prashant Jagtap has also reportedly pointed out that they are mulling over ordering an inspection of all such construction sites to ascertain whether they are ensuring adequate safety measures for their workers.

This is not the first time for Pune. There has been a constant demand from the Bandhkaam Majdoor Sabha Union's as well as the groups like Kushal (who work for labourers training) for checks on all security measures before a site construction begins. And, this mishap has once again created a roar for safety in construction.
