Unit 4 of the Kakrapar Atomic Power Project (KAPP 4 – 700 MW) achieved the important milestone of criticality (start of controlled fission chain reaction) paving the way for its eventual transition to generate power for commercial use. In 2022-23, nuclear energy formed around 2.8 per cent of India’s total energy production. KAPP-4 is the second in the series of 16 indigenous pressurised heavy water reactors (PHWRs) of 700 MW each being set up in the country. KAPP 3 and 4 (2x700 MW) are located at Kakrapar in Surat, Gujarat. These indigenous PHWRs have advanced safety features.
