NERPC to execute feasibility test for India-Bhutan transmission line

On Monday, Arunachal Pradesh Deputy Chief Minister Chowna Mein asked the North East Regional Power Committee (NERPC) to execute a feasibility study for the establishment of a transmission line of 132 kilovolts from Lumla in his state and the Kholongchu Hydro-Electric Power Station of 600 MW in Bhutan.

The Kholongchu Hydro-Electric Power plant of 600 MW in Bhutan is approximately 40 km away from Lumla, Tawang.

In the NERPC meeting in Guwahati, Deputy CM holding the power portfolio said that the NERPC might come out with a tangible policy decision according to the norms associated with the international exchange of electricity.

He requested the NERPC members for supporting the idea since it will help to make a pragmatic initiative while improving the reliability of the power grids of India and Bhutan alongside meeting the electricity demand.

Deputy CM congratulated the state-owned North East Electric Power Corporation (NEEPCO) for their successful commissioning of the Kameng Hydro Electric Project (HEP) of 600 MW by putting the final unit in commercial operation on February 12.

He requested the NEEPCO to continue at the same pace to take up the new projects in Arunachal Pradesh including 90 MW New Malling HEP in Tawang, 120 MW Nafra HEP, and 330 MW Kuru HEP.

He said that the construction of the 2,000 MW Subansiri Lower Hydro Electric Project which was resumed by the National Hydro Power Corporation in October 2019 and two of its units of 500 MW each will become operational by August.
