Gammon India

“Considering that India is going through a massive infrastructure development phase, recruiting, training and retaining the best available talent is the biggest leadership challenge."- Abhijit Rajan, Chairman & Managing Director

The Company

Established in 1922, Gammon India Ltd is one of India’s largest civil engineering construction companies. From the Gateway of India to India’s first indigenously designed fast breed reactor, Gammon is a name that is inextricably woven into the fabric of the country. With over 90 years of experience in the field of infrastructure, among its other achievements, Gammon can lay claim to the largest number of bridges built in the whole of the Commonwealth. From construction, the company diversified into infrastructure management, transmission lines and the power sector. As builders to the nation, Gammon has made concrete contributions by designing and constructing bridges, ports, harbours, thermal and nuclear power stations, dams, high-rise structures, international airports, chemical and fertiliser complexes, environmental structures, and cross-country water, oil and gas pipelines. It has accomplished this by fusing tremendous engineering knowledge with groundbreaking skills and cutting-edge technology. The planners, designers and construction specialists at Gammon have proved their competence and innovative skills in India and abroad. Its achievements have won the company the status of an R&D institution - and unequalled honour - and its insatiable quest for perfection has led Gammon to pioneer technologies like reinforced and pre-stressed concrete, long-span bridges, underwater concreting, thin shell structures, non-shrinking concrete and aluminium trusses for launching precast, pre-stressed beams.

With its experience, it was natural to move into the business of infrastructure projects development with the establishment of Gammon Infrastructure Projects Ltd (GIPL), modelled on a PPP format. Now, Gammon is a global player. With its acquisition of Ansaldo, it has diversified into manufacturing industrial boilers, heat recovery steam generators and utility boilers up to 660 mw; and has made headway in manufacturing steam turbines up to 660 mw through its subsidiary Franco Tosi Mecanica. Among its list of accolades, Gammon has received an award from the National Safety Council (NSC) for developing and implementing an effective management system and procedure and achieving good performance in occupational safety at its site in Bengaluru - just one of many awards for excellence in safety in a sparkling career.

Future Watch!

The company expects to continue and strengthen its core business of infrastructure - power, transportation, heavy industrial projects, water management - and integrate its recently acquired international businesses, such as power equipment manufacturing, with its Indian operations.
