Tamil Nadu is preparing to be in the top position among other states for renewable forms of energy. The state is blessed with a lengthy coastline along with ample sunshine, being an early mover and one of the leaders for most of the 21st century. In a recent development, the Tamil Nadu Generation and Distribution Company (Tangedco) formulated a plan to set up solar power projects for a 20,000 MW green energy generation in the state. This incremental capacity will be installed in the upcoming 10 years. Tamil Nadu is currently a leading state in terms of renewable energy installed capacity. The solar expansion is complete to reduce the state’s dependence on coal-based thermal power plants. As per reports, Tangedco has recently commissioned AECOM India, a private technical consultancy firm to develop a detailed project report in the next four months. It has started the studies on land and locations for these substations, transmission lines, transformers, and batteries for energy storage. Tangedco wants to eliminate the cycle of coal shortages and the pollution caused by the usage of coal in the power plants. According to reports, Tamil Nadu will add 4000 MW of solar power by having an energy storage infrastructure installed in the state. The district collectors are directed to start the identification and arrangement process for land that will be needed for the development of the solar installations.
