BIS developing standard on paraffinic green diesel

The Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) announced on Monday that it has formulated nine standards pertaining to biofuels and is actively working on establishing a standard for paraffinic (green) diesel. BIS Director General Pramod Kumar Tiwari revealed that these standards will play a significant role in advancing the objectives of the Global Biofuel Alliance (GBA), a multilateral forum recently introduced by Prime Minister Narendra Modi during the G20 leaders' summit in the nation's capital.

Tiwari affirmed the commitment of BIS to support this groundbreaking government initiative by developing relevant Indian Standards and essential quality parameters and performance specifications. He also disclosed that work is currently underway to create a standard for paraffinic (green) diesel, a fuel derived from second-generation (2G) feedstock.

BIS functions as India's national standards body under the aegis of the Food and Consumer Affairs Ministry. According to BIS, the leading producers and consumers of biofuels globally are the United States, Brazil, and India. These three nations collectively account for 85 percent of global ethanol production and 81 percent of consumption. In 2022, the global ethanol market was valued at USD 99 billion, and it is projected to exhibit a compound annual growth rate of 5 percent by 2032. This growth presents substantial opportunities for Indian industries, contributing to the income of farmers, job creation, and the overall development of the Indian ecosystem, according to BIS.

The development and implementation of these standards align with India's commitment to sustainable energy solutions and its efforts to promote cleaner and more environmentally friendly fuel alternatives. This initiative not only positions India as a significant player in the global biofuel market but also supports its goals of economic growth and environmental sustainability.
