Renewed push to run imported coal-based plants

The Centre is infringing on state authority and forcing them to acquire imported coal in order to conceal its own inefficiencies in delivering local dry fuel to thermal plants, as per reports. The power ministry's directives to generating firms earlier this month are pushing states to enhance blending to augment local coal to compensate for Coal India's limited supply of dry fuel. The ministry has also directed that all imported coal-fired power plants operate at full capacity, and that an upward tariff revision would be made by a committee. The nonreceipt of sufficient quantity of coal at thermal plants across the country was a lack of coordination between three ministries viz Coal, Railway and Power.
