Meerut South Station opens, extending Delhi-Ghaziabad RRTS

01 Aug 2024

The eight-kilometer third section of the Delhi-Ghaziabad-Meerut RRTS is set to opened on 18 August, extending the rapid rail service to Meerut. The National Capital Region Transport Corporation (NCRTC) announced that the Meerut (South) station will now be operational.

This new extension increases the train's route to 42 kilometers, building on the previously launched 34-kilometer Sahibabad-Duhai and Duhai-Modinagar North sections. It marks the midpoint of the 82-kilometer corridor, expected to be fully operational by mid-2025.

The Meerut (South) station's opening was initially scheduled with the launch of the second 17-kilometer section, but delays pushed back the debut. After receiving safety approvals for this segment from Modinagar North to Meerut South in June, the station is now ready for service.

Meerut South will be the first station in the district on this rapid rail corridor, which will also include metro services. This new section will cut travel time from Sahibabad to Meerut South to approximately 30 minutes.

Earlier, Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated a 17-kilometer stretch in Ghaziabad on 20 October 2023, followed by another 17 kilometers on 6 March 2024.
