Bengaluru to get 400 km metro, suburban rail by 2030

The Union Cabinet, led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, gave the green light to Phase 3 of the Bengaluru Metro Rail Project. The expansion, set to cost an estimated Rs. 15,611 crore, will see significant financial backing, with both the Union and State governments contributing 20% equity. Additionally, the Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL) is anticipated to secure over Rs 7,000 crore in loans from the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA).

Upon completion of Phase 3, Bengaluru's metro network will stretch to 220.20 kilometers. The Detailed Project Report (DPR) for Phase 3A, which covers a 36.59 km stretch of the Red Line, is currently awaiting approval from the state government.

Phase 3A will feature a mix of underground and elevated sections running from Sarjapur to Hebbal, with 28 planned stations. Key city locations such as Carmeleram, Agara, Koramangala, Dairy Circle, Central College, and Armane Nagar will be connected.

In addition to the metro expansion, the Karnataka Rail Infrastructure Development Company Limited (K-RIDE) is advancing the Bengaluru Suburban Rail Project (BSRP). This project encompasses over 147 kilometers of rail across four corridors, with completion expected by the end of 2030.

If both the metro and suburban rail projects are completed on schedule, Bengaluru will boast nearly 400 kilometers of rail-based public transport by 2030.
