Kempegowda International Airport’s (KIA) Air Traffic Control (ATC) is on the cusp of a significant transformation to accommodate future air traffic growth and incorporate cutting-edge technologies. This critical hub for flight operations, managed by the Airports Authority of India (AAI), has experienced a substantial increase in air traffic movements. The airport handles 720 to 730 air traffic movements every day. The refurbishment and upgrading process is expected to cost about Rs.2 billion.

Cochin International Airport will double its installed solar capacity in next 5-10 years
Cochin International Airport (CIAL) is set to double its installed solar power generation capacity in the next 5-10 years with plans to install new plants in remote locations. CIAL is the world’s first airport to be fully powered by solar energy. With seven solar plants, a solar carport, and floating solar panels, it has an installed capacity of 50 MW at present. This target involves the installation of new solar plants in remote locations, similar to the Payyanur plant. In addition to solar projects, CIAL also plans to venture into run-of-the-river hydroelectric projects – it already has a commissioned project in Arippara. CIAL, by April 2024, generated 350 million units of power, cutting carbon emissions by 28,000 metric tonnes annually.

Call for check of country’s airports after Delhi T1 roof collapse incident
Kinjarapu Naidu, Minister, Civil Aviation, said an inquiry will be undertaken by experts to assess the cause of the early morning accident at Delhi International Airport wherein heavy rains led to the collapse of a portion of a roof at Terminal 1, leading to the demise of one individual.
He said that Delhi International Airport (DIAL) has been asked to do a verification. From the ministry, the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) too will be supervising this inspection and will soon submit a report. The minister said that across the country any airport with similar structures will be thoroughly checked to see if there is a requirement for an independent inquiry.

Tamil Nadu to establish an international airport in Hosur
The Tamil Nadu government will set up an international airport on 2,000 acres of land in Hosur with a capacity to handle 30 million passengers a year and to cater the increasing industrial needs in Krishnagiri and Dharmapuri districts, Chief Minister M K Stalin said. The presence of an airport will help the overall socio-economic development of the region and not just Hosur, the chief minister said. Hosur has been attracting more investments in the electronics and electric vehicle manufacturing sector since the last few years. The state is implementing various projects to improve the infrastructure in Hosur.

Will accommodate over 10 million passengers
The city airport has started work on the Rs.50 billion Kolkata airport expansion project. A new 10 million passengers per annum capacity integrated terminal for domestic and international passengers will be constructed within the next six years. The work is expected to begin next August. A new air traffic services (ATS) facility has already been constructed but it is yet to be equipped to begin operations. Passenger growth projections indicate that the capacity of the existing terminal will get saturated by 2030-31 despite the interim modular expansion of the current terminal that is underway to increase its capacity from 26 to 28 million per year.
