Thiruvananthapuram: Iconic Gandhi Park to get a major change

The iconic Gandhi Park, located in the bustling East Fort area of Thiruvananthapuram, is reportedly set to undergo a significant transformation. According to officials from Smart City Thiruvananthapuram Ltd (SCTL), a comprehensive plan has been launched aimed at enhancing the aesthetic and functional aspects of the popular public space. It is planned that the renovated park will be opened before Onam.

Gandhi Park, which is a cherished landmark frequently visited by hundreds of visitors daily, is slated to receive a series of upgrades aimed at enriching the visitors? experience. These enhancements include improved lighting to ensure better visibility and safety during the evening hours. Additionally, the park will be adorned with Gandhi-themed messages and installations, creating a serene environment that reflects the principles and legacy of the Mahatma. The project, estimated at Rs 1.8 crore, is expected to completely revamp the park, including the construction of an exhibition wall displaying the legacy and messages of Mahatma Gandhi.

An official from SCTL stated that the renovated park aims to provide a refreshing experience for the public, transforming it into a space where visitors can feel the essence of Mahatma Gandhi's legacy. Plans also include adorning the park with attractive murals of the leader. According to the official, the landscaping will follow a theme with white-coloured flowering plants, symbolising non-violence.

Further features planned for the park include additional pedestrian pathways, an exhibition pavilion, an amphitheatre, a renovated entrance gate and compound wall, a smart vending kiosk, renovation of the base of the existing Gandhi statue, and various art installations. The park, situated at East Fort, one of the busiest parts of the city, currently attracts scores of visitors daily and serves as a venue for public events and parking for visitors to Chalai Market.
