The Chairman of the Railway Board, Anil Kumar Lahoti, has highlighted the growing need for additional manpower to maintain the safe and efficient operation of India's vast railway network. In an interview, Lahoti stressed that the increase in rail traffic, combined with extensive maintenance work, is putting a significant strain on current human resources. As India continues to invest in expanding and modernizing its railway system, ensuring adequate staffing has become a priority for the Ministry of Railways.
Lahoti pointed out that while technological advancements and automation have improved operational efficiency, human oversight remains critical to ensuring passenger safety. He noted that several sections of the railway network are now busier than ever, with both passenger and freight services increasing. This rise in traffic demands more frequent maintenance of tracks, signaling systems, and rolling stock, which in turn requires more staff, especially skilled personnel such as drivers, station masters, and maintenance workers.
The Chairman also mentioned ongoing efforts by the Railways to address this issue, including plans to recruit more staff in key operational roles. However, the recruitment process has faced delays, which has added to the pressure on the existing workforce. Lahoti stressed that while safety remains the top priority, without sufficient manpower, the workload on current employees could lead to fatigue, increasing the risk of operational errors.
Additionally, Lahoti acknowledged that the Indian Railways is undergoing rapid modernization, with the introduction of high-speed trains, new corridors, and electrification projects. These advancements further emphasize the need for a well-trained and adequately staffed workforce. He called for a balanced approach that combines technological upgrades with human expertise to maintain the highest standards of safety and efficiency.
The Railway Board's focus on manpower expansion comes at a time when India's rail network is expected to play a critical role in supporting the country's economic growth, making safe and reliable train services essential.
