The Mumbai Railway Vikas Corporation (MRVC) has set a target to complete the quadrupling of tracks between Borivali and Virar by December 2027. This critical infrastructure project is designed to separate mail and express trains from the suburban corridor, thereby improving services for commuters.
MRVC has already awarded contracts for various construction activities, including service buildings and residential quarters. Current work includes building a relay room at Mira Road, a signal office, a tool room, a route relay interlocking building, an RPF barrack at Dahisar, a station building at Naigaon, and residential quarters at Vasai Road and Bhayander. Furthermore, tenders for relocating structures were awarded on October 16, 2023, and work is underway. Around 47 railway structures, such as booking offices, relay rooms, toilet blocks, and railway offices, are slated for demolition as part of the project.
Contracts for constructing, modifying, and extending foot over bridges and platforms were awarded in February, with work already started at Naigaon. In June, tenders were invited for the construction of all major and minor bridges, road over bridges, and related earthworks for the proposed embankment.
Subhash Chand Gupta, Chairman and Managing Director of MRVC, indicated that the organization is fully dedicated to constructing the fifth and sixth lines between Borivali and Virar, emphasizing the project's significance in enhancing the commuting experience for millions and improving Mumbai's suburban rail network. MRVC has also completed the survey to finalize the alignment and has submitted land acquisition proposals to the district collector. Additionally, proposals for tree-cutting in the affected areas have been submitted to the respective municipal bodies.
