MM Hills Pushes Sustainable Waste Management

01 Nov 2024

The collaboration focuses on setting up a robust waste management system, addressing the challenges posed by the increasing footfall in MM Hills. Pilgrims, tourists, and residents generate substantial waste, often leading to littering and environmental degradation. The initiative includes a comprehensive plan for waste segregation at the source, recycling, and safe disposal of non-recyclable waste.

MyKaps, known for its expertise in community-centric waste management, will train local communities and stakeholders in effective waste disposal methods. The project also involves setting up collection points, deploying biodegradable waste processing units, and integrating technology to monitor and streamline operations.

Authorities have also outlined plans to raise awareness among visitors about sustainable practices. Signage and campaigns will encourage pilgrims to actively participate in maintaining the sanctity and cleanliness of the region. Additionally, biodegradable waste will be converted into compost for use in local agricultural activities, promoting a circular economy model.

This initiative aligns with Karnataka’s broader goals of fostering eco-friendly tourism and maintaining the ecological integrity of its natural and cultural heritage sites. MM Hills, a significant biodiversity hotspot, benefits greatly from such measures, ensuring the preservation of its flora and fauna.

The local community has responded positively, seeing the initiative as a step toward improving living conditions while safeguarding their environment. Visitors too have expressed appreciation for the focus on sustainability, as it enhances the experience of this spiritual and scenic destination.

The partnership between the MM Hills Authority and MyKaps serves as a model for integrating environmental stewardship with regional development, ensuring that tourism and ecology thrive together.
