Ludhiana's Smart City mission will take more time to complete

01 Jun 2024

Given that the June deadline is quickly approaching and that a number of projects, including the construction of significant bridges over the Buddha Dariya and the Sidhwan Canal, are still unfinished, the last phase of the Smart City mission in this area is certain to require more time. The people in charge of execution do not anticipate completing their work by October.

Nine long years have passed since the inception of the Smart City project, with Ludhiana being one of the initial 20 cities chosen for this flagship initiative. Because the citizens of the city were unhappy with the calibre of the design and construction provided under these projects, the local leaders continued to come under fire during this period.

Similar to the other bridge over the Buddha Dariya between Manna Singh Nagar and the route from Transport Nagar to the Shingaar movie theatre, the building of the second bridge across the Buddha Dariya at Shivpuri is not yet complete. The deadline for these projects was set for October, but because many of the works haven't even reached the tendering stage, the executing teams will exceed it.

But several projects are almost finished, such as the UID number plate project, the bioremediation of the city's legacy trash, the building of a basketball court at Guru Nanak Stadium, the provision of 24x7 surface water to the ABD region, and the purchase of hook loaders and compactors for 22 locations. However, these will need to be extended since their deadline expires at the end of June; otherwise, there would be more work than can be completed in a few days. The sources who have tracked these projects stated that, based on the volume of outstanding work, there is a possibility that their deadlines may need to be extended, possibly into the next year. There shouldn't be any concerns because the municipal corporation has already obtained project funding for the employment it has planned.
