L&T Bags Bengaluru Metro Contracts

01 May 2024

Bengaluru's ambitious metro expansion project has hit significant milestones with Larsen & Toubro Limited (L&T) securing contracts for two crucial corridors, marking substantial progress in the city's urban transit infrastructure.

Of the four corridors comprising the 148.1 km project, L&T has clinched contracts for the fourth corridor, known as the Kanaka Line, spanning from Heelalige to Rajanakunte covering 46.8 km, and the second corridor, the Mallige Line, stretching from Benniganahalli to Chikkabanavara, totaling 25 km.

The construction progress in the Mallige Line has surpassed the 20% mark, indicating steady advancement in this vital transportation artery for Bengaluru. According to officials, the groundwork for the Kanaka Line commenced on Tuesday (May 7) with the strategic barricading of the railway line. Initial preparatory measures such as soil testing and re-surveying have been undertaken by the contractor over the past four months. The project initiation includes the construction of five minor bridges along the route, with barricading serving as a precursor to full-scale construction activities. The contract, awarded on December 30, 2023, comes with a strict deadline of 30 months for completion.

While the contract for the first corridor, the Sampige Line, spanning 41 km from KSR Bengaluru to Devanahalli via Yelahanka, awaits partial awarding post the lifting of the model code of conduct, plans are already in motion to commence work from KSR to Yelahanka via Yesvantpur shortly. Proposals have been submitted to the Railways for alignment clearance, signaling proactive steps towards expanding Bengaluru's metro network.

Furthermore, the third corridor, the Parijaata Line, stretching 35 km from Kengeri to Whitefield, is slated for contract awarding a month following the Sampige Line developments, providing a comprehensive outlook on the systematic expansion of Bengaluru's metro infrastructure.

The securing of these contracts by Larsen & Toubro Limited not only signifies progress in Bengaluru's metro expansion but also underscores the pivotal role of strategic partnerships in realizing the city's vision for modernized urban transit solutions. With each corridor inching closer to fruition, Bengaluru anticipates enhanced connectivity and mobility, catering to the burgeoning needs of its dynamic populace.
