The long-pending master plan for Kochi City, in development since 2002, received official approval from the Kerala government. Following rigorous legal scrutiny, the master plan was endorsed by the Local Self-Government Minister and other authorities.

Upon issuance of the government notification, the new master plan's provisions will immediately take effect. Mayor M Anilkumar stated, "Once the notification is issued, all building construction and development activities must adhere to the new master plan. The existing Structure Plan 1991, which governed the corporation area until now, will be superseded."

The master plan (2019?2040) aims to improve urban life quality while reinforcing the city's foundation in alignment with the goals of the central government's Atal Mission for Rejuvenation and Urban Transformation (AMRUT) scheme. Additionally, 19 out of the 21 detailed town planning (DTP) schemes applicable in the corporation area will be annulled. The last master plan for Kochi City was formulated in 1970.

Mayor Anilkumar reflected, ?Despite previous attempts under former mayor Dinesh Mani's tenure, a comprehensive master plan did not materialise. After considerable effort, Kochi Corporation has now formulated a new master plan for the city, following extensive discussions and scrutiny."

Led by the master plan committee, substantial efforts were invested in drafting and finalising the master plan. This process included special council meetings, consultations with various organisations, and engagements with public representatives such as MPs and MLAs.
