KMRL to inspect the base of pillar 347 on Kochi Metro track

01 Feb 2022

Kochi Metro Rail Limited (KMRL), which operates the service, an extensive inspection of the foundation of pillar number 347 of the Kochi Metro will be carried out soon, according to officials.

A tilt had previously been detected on the track above this pillar, which is located near Edappally at Pathadipalam, and preliminary inspections of the track and viaduct had revealed no defects.

The foundation would require advanced equipment, according to KMRL officials.

The development, according to the officials, will have no impact on Metro services.

The tilt has been reported to the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC), which was in charge of the Kochi Metro's construction. The DMRC, on the other hand, has yet to respond. During the construction phase, each Metro pillar's foundation was designed separately based on the type of soil on the site.

Only a site inspection could reveal the reasons for the tilt, according to Metro Man' E Sreedharan, who guided the Kochi Metro during its early stages.

If the tilt is caused by corrosion on a bearing or any other mechanical part, according to the legendary engineer, it can be easily corrected. However, if the type of soil at the base has changed as a result of floods, only a site inspection can confirm this.
