The Ministry of Information Technology (IT) is in the process of creating a voluntary code of conduct and ethics for artificial intelligence (AI) companies. Discussions are ongoing with various stakeholders to establish guidelines that address aspects such as data handling, labelling, and ethical considerations surrounding AI usage.
This initiative comes amid a global surge in AI development, with governments worldwide emphasizing the need for responsible practices. Last week, the IT Ministry, in collaboration with UNESCO, held a consultation with stakeholders on AI safety and ethics, as India works on creating an inclusive AI policy under the 'AI for All' vision. This aligns with India’s ambitious 'IndiaAI Mission,' which has secured over Rs 10,000 crore in funding.
The mission's primary focus is to ensure that AI development remains safe, ethical, and accountable. By promoting indigenous frameworks and self-assessment tools, the IndiaAI Mission aims to empower innovators and make AI benefits accessible across all sectors.
