India is moving forward with plans to indigenise the production of bullet trains and associated signalling systems, with the goal of constructing high-speed trains for future corridors. This development is expected to make India self-sufficient in producing trains capable of speeds up to 280 km/h, with operational speeds averaging 250 km/h.
The progress on the Mumbai-Ahmedabad High-Speed Rail (MAHSR) corridor is already accelerating, particularly in Maharashtra, following the recent election results. The land acquisition process is complete, and over 320 kilometers of physical infrastructure is ready.
According to senior officials, India plans to build its own bullet trains based on the Vande Bharat platform, which will be improved with advancements in bogies, power trains, and bodies over the next three years. The signalling systems for these corridors will incorporate Kavach 5.0, an advanced train protection system.
While India will develop its own bullet trains, the collaboration with Japanese suppliers for the Mumbai-Ahmedabad corridor is ongoing. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has also announced plans to explore bullet train corridors in other regions of India.
