Gujarat has 31% share in India's rooftop solar landscape

01 Dec 2023

Gujarat contributes significantly to India's rooftop solar installation, with a total installed capacity of 3,174 megawatts (MW), representing 31% of the country's overall rooftop solar capacity of 10,406 MW, as revealed in Lok Sabha data. RK Singh, the Minister of New and Renewable Energy and Power, shared this information in response to Sunita Duggal's inquiry. The data highlights Gujarat as the primary beneficiary of Phase II of the Solar Rooftop Scheme, with 74% of installations in the state receiving government support and subsidies under the scheme.

From 2019 to November 2023, Gujarat added 1,956 MW of capacity, constituting 61% of the total capacity increase. Additionally, the state ranks second in solar power generation with a total capacity of 10,417 MW, with rooftop solar accounting for 30% of the overall installed capacity.

An additional response underscores the state's progress in solar power generation, attributing the success to various factors such as new residential schemes featuring high-capacity solar water heaters and electricity generation plants contributing power to the grid. Although individual residential units still dominate, there is a shifting trend with more residential societies adopting rooftop solar, as noted by a local expert.
