The Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) and the Central Mechanical Engineering Research Institute (CMERI) have introduced an electric tiller designed to support small and marginal farmers. This innovative piece of agricultural technology aims to promote sustainable and efficient farming practices, the Ministry of Science & Technology announced.

Launched in Durgapur by N. Kalaiselvi, CSIR Director General and Secretary of the Department of Scientific and Industrial Research (DSIR), the electric tiller is expected to revolutionize farming for those with land holdings of less than 2 hectares, who make up over 80% of India's farming community.

"The Electric Tiller boasts enhanced torque and field efficiency, while also prioritizing user comfort and environmental sustainability. It significantly reduces hand-arm vibration, operates quietly, and produces zero exhaust emissions compared to traditional ICE tillers," the ministry stated.

Designed with a user-friendly approach, the electric tiller promises to reduce operational costs by up to 85%. It supports battery pack swapping and offers multiple charging options, including AC and Solar DC charging, making it both economical and versatile.

The tiller is compatible with various standard agricultural attachments such as ridgers, ploughs, iron wheels, and cultivators. Additionally, it features a 2-inch water pump and a trolley attachment capable of carrying up to 500 kg, significantly enhancing its functionality. With electronic controls and ergonomic handling, the tiller allows operators to navigate fields effortlessly, reducing fatigue and increasing productivity.

This launch is a significant step towards promoting environmentally friendly farming practices and helping India achieve its net-zero emissions goals. The CSIR-CMERI electric tiller is set to provide small farmers with a sustainable, cost-effective solution to modern farming challenges.
