The Central Government has allocated ?2,000 crore for the second phase of the Meghalaya Integrated Transport Project (MITP), a significant step toward improving transportation infrastructure in the northeastern state. This funding will be instrumental in developing a robust network of roads, bridges, and transport facilities across Meghalaya, enhancing regional connectivity and fostering economic growth.
The MITP is a comprehensive initiative aimed at addressing the state's unique geographical challenges, including hilly terrains and remote areas that hinder smooth transportation. The first phase of the project, which has already seen the development of critical road networks, set the foundation for this ambitious infrastructure upgrade.
With the second phase, the focus will be on extending the existing road networks, constructing new bridges, and upgrading key transport facilities. This phase will prioritize the development of strategic road corridors that connect remote villages to major towns, improving access to markets, healthcare, and educational facilities for the local population.
The project also aims to bolster the state's economy by facilitating smoother transportation of goods, thereby reducing logistics costs and making Meghalaya a more attractive destination for investment. Improved infrastructure is expected to promote tourism, a vital sector for the state, by making key tourist destinations more accessible.
Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad Sangma expressed gratitude to the central government for its continued support, emphasising that the MITP will play a crucial role in transforming the state's infrastructure landscape. The project aligns with the broader goals of the North Eastern Region's development, which focuses on connectivity and economic integration with the rest of the country.
